Common Questions
How much do I need to retire?
The amount you need to retire depends on your unique retirement goals. For some, retirement may mean gradually reducing work hours and enjoying income from part-time pursuits. For others, it’s about spending quality time with family, travelling the world, or fulfilling passions that were set aside in the pursuit of building a financial legacy. Whatever your vision for retirement, understanding the financial requirements to achieve it is the crucial first step.
The Association of Superannuation Funds of Australia (ASFA) have developed a Retirement Standard that shows for a comfortable retirement (as of June quarter 2024), singles would require a minimum income of $52,085 per annum and couples $73,337 per annum. For a modest retirement, singles would require a minimum of $33,134 and a couple would need $47,731 per annum. Both budgets assume that retirees own their home outright and are relatively healthy. As an example, if you had 25 years in retirement and need $40,000 per annum, you need $1 million dollars in your retirement. If you want $65,000 per annum, you need $1.625 million.

When can I access my superannuation?
You can access your super once you reach your preservation age (between 55 and 60) and meet a condition of release, such as retirement or turning 65. Early access is available in limited circumstances, such as financial hardship or medical conditions. Our advisers help you navigate these rules and optimise your withdrawals for long-term financial security.
How should I plan for retirement if I’m self-employed?
Planning for retirement as a self-employed professional requires a proactive, strategic approach to ensure your hard-earned success translates into lasting financial security. Without the safety net of employer superannuation contributions, it’s vital to take charge of your retirement planning early. The key lies in creating a strategy that is tailored to your unique circumstances and long-term objectives.
Begin by evaluating your current financial situation and defining a clear vision for the lifestyle you desire in retirement. From there, develop a comprehensive financial plan to address any gaps and ensure a smooth transition to the retirement you’ve envisioned. This might include maximising superannuation contributions, investing in tax-effective structures, and creating a tailored investment portfolio to ensure your money works as hard as you do.
Don’t overlook risk management — protecting your income and business assets is crucial to safeguarding your financial future. A professional financial planner and wealth management adviser brings clarity to these aspects of retirement planning, guiding you through wealth-building, succession planning, and preparing for unexpected challenges.
With the right plan in place and a dedicated private wealth advisor by your side, you can confidently transition from running your business to enjoying the retirement you’ve earned.
